“ENGLEWOOD – Northmont City Schools will break ground today on the Early Learning Center that will serve all preK-1 students in the district beginning in 2014.

School officials, local and state officials and the public are expected to attend the 1 p.m. ground-breaking ceremony at the building site adjacent to the Kleptz YMCA, 1200 National Road, with a reception immediately following in the YMCA gymnasium.

This fall, construction is slated to begin on the new high school that will be built around the existing auditorium. The school will open in 2015.

Construction of both buildings will be covered by funding the 5.9-mill bond issue and permanent improvement levy voters approved in November.

The district was allocated nearly $35 million toward the project, about 47 percent of the cost to build them.

Meanwhile, the district this summer is equipping five of the six elementary schools with air-conditioning. That work should be completed in time for the start of school on Aug. 21.

“They’re working on them right now,” said Superintendent Sarah Zatik, noting Northwood Elementary already has air-conditioning.

O.R. Edgington Elementary, which was built in 1921 and will only be occupied for two more years, will receive window air-conditioning units.

Zatik said school officials hope adding the air conditioners will enhance the building’s appeal when it comes time for the district to try to sell it.”
